When and Where Did Crop Circles Start?

The modern phenomenon of crop circles started in the late 20th century, with sightings in England’s rural fields. The first widely recognized modern crop circles appeared in the 1970s, mostly in southern England. However, reports of unusual patterns in fields date much earlier. A story from the 17th century known as “The Mowing Devil” tells of a farmer who claimed a strange, circular pattern appeared overnight in his oat field, attributed to supernatural forces. But it was in the 1980s that crop circles gained significant media attention, as intricate and larger designs began appearing in England and then across the world, drawing the interest of scientists, journalists, and enthusiasts alike.

Why Did Crop Circles Start?

The true purpose behind crop circles remains mysterious and often debated. For believers in extraterrestrial life, crop circles are seen as messages or signs from otherworldly beings. The precision of the designs has led some to speculate that advanced technologies, potentially alien, were used. Others consider crop circles a form of modern folk art, a way for humans to engage creatively with the landscape. In the 1970s, two men from England, Doug Bower and Dave Chorley, claimed responsibility for creating many crop circles as a hoax, intending to stir curiosity and mislead paranormal investigators. Despite this admission, crop circle sightings have continued, with even more intricate designs appearing each year, fueling a mix of scientific and paranormal theories.

How Are Crop Circles Created?

If human-made, crop circles are typically created by flattening sections of crops in specific patterns, often using ropes and wooden planks. Creators mark out designs in advance, carefully planning each shape and line to achieve a precise effect. When done well, the results are often breathtaking, especially when viewed from above. Some claim crop circles have unique properties, like altered plant growth or magnetic fields, although these claims remain scientifically unverified.
